Last chance Christmas Shopping: The next two weeks are your last chance to shop for Christmas Items in the Gift Shop at the Bland County Historical Society. The Gift Shop will be open on Thursday and Friday, December 12-13, 2013 from 9-4 pm and on December 19-20, 2013 from 9-4 pm. The Society Office will be closing for the winter at 4pm on December 20, 2013 and will reopen in April, 2014. Research requests and mail order items placed by phone or email will be fulfilled during the time that the Historical Society office is closed. .

drawing of downtown Bland available for sale.
Bland County Historical Society introduced several new items for sale
at the Festival of Leaves,
including the 2014 Bland County Barn
Calendar and the 2013 Bland County Historical Society Christmas
Ornament featuring Sharon College.
The theme for the 2014
Bland County Historical Society Calendar is Bland County Barns. The
Calendar contains 13 photographs, one for the cover and one for
each of the 12 months. The photographs represent the choice of the
public who voted during the month of August from the Display of
Barns that are posted at the Society Office. The 2014 Barn Calendar sells for $10 at the
Society Office in the old Jail.
You may request calendars mailed
to friends or relatives who live away from Bland for an additional
$5 shipping charge.
The 2013 BCHS Christmas Ornament features Sharon College. This
ornament is the fourth in a series of Christmas Ornaments by the
Bland County Historical Society featuring historic sites in the
County. Previous ornaments are of the Bland County Courthouse, the
Bland County Jail, and the Wolf Creek Bridge in Rocky Gap. The cost
of the ornament will be $20.
Sharon College was
established in the old Sharon Springs Resort at Effna (near Ceres),
VA in 1892. It was a significant educational institution in Bland County
for almost a decade. Ann Hardy Beardshall's 3rd
Historical Glimpse of Bland County about Sharon College is
also now available for purchase.
Rev. Jo Ellen Hetherington was the featured speaker at the Bland County Historical Society Fall Quarterly Membership Meeting, September 21. We
had a full house and appreciate everyone who came to the

pictures taken in and around Ceres. Dean DeRosa is a
descendent of families in the Ceres Area. He has developed a
wonderful website with many pictures and links to Bland County,
particularly Ceres, the Groseclose Family, and Civil War in
