SCENIC PHOTOGRAPHS NEEDED
Calling all
"camera-bugs" - get those cameras dusted, install new batteries, and
start touring our wonderful county! The Bland County Historical Society
is soliciting scenic photographs, taken in Bland County, for the
Society's 2013 calendar. Thirteen photographs are needed for the
calendar, and since all seasons will be featured, folks need to start
snapping photos now!
The deadline to submit photographs is July 1, 2012. The color
photographs will need to be either 5 x 7 or 8 x 10 in size, be current
or within the last three years, and feature a scenic view (buildings
such as barns, bridges, etc., may be included), with a printed
description of the photo attached. Submitted photographs will become the
property of the Bland County Historical Society.
The Calendar Committee will select 13 photos for the calendar, and
recognition of the photographer will be noted on each photo selected.
So, start today and get that "perfect" picture - call Brenda King at
276-688-0088 if you have questions. Photographs may be mailed to:
Bland County Historical Society
PO Box 416
Bland VA 24315.
They may also be dropped off at the Society office on Thursdays or
Fridays, or may be sent digitally to
info@blandcountyhistsoc.org
.
HISTORICAL SOCIETY MEMBERSHIP DRIVE
The purpose of the Bland County Historical Society is to bring together
those people interested in history and especially the history of Bland
County. Understanding the history of our community is basic to our
democratic way of life, gives us a better understanding of our state and
nation, and promotes a better appreciation of our American heritage.
The Society's major function is to discover and collect any materials
which may help to establish or illustrate the history of the area. It
provides for the preservation of such material and for its
accessibility, as far as may be feasible, to all who wish to examine or
study it.
A major project is underway at the Society office to obtain new members
that are willing to help with our mission and help us to "Gather the
Past for the Future."
To help preserve our beautiful county's history, we invite you to join
the Bland County Historical Society. Members receive newsletters as they
are published, and beginning this year, all members receive a 10%
discount on all purchases in the Society Gift Shop.
Our January-December dues are: Individuals, $15.00; Couples, $25.00,
Lifetime $150.00 and Students (public school-age students), $5.00.
Payment can be dropped off at the Society office, or checks can be made
out to the Bland County Historical Society, and mailed along with a
membership application to P.O. Box 416,
Bland VA 24315. Your membership cards will be mailed to you. The Bland
County Historical Society is a 501c3 non-profit organization. If you
have questions, please call Brenda King at 276-688-0088.
The Society is still taking donations for the
painting project on the
original jail building roof (completed in November). The cost was $1500.00. Donations may be sent to Bland County
Historical Society, PO Box 416, Bland VA 24315. Work remains to be done
on the gutters and trim.
